Thought of the Day: On the Harmony of Religions

Last modified July 3, 2007

In this episode of “Thought of the Day”, Sanjaya Spettigue reflects on the possibility of a universal religion, and also on the harmony of the many world religions.

Sri Chinmoy has spent more than 41 years of his life traveling the world, trying to inspire people to lead a higher, deeper life of inner progress and to love one another. A good example of a worldwide initiative created by Sri Chinmoy for this purpose is the World Harmony Run, an international olympic-style torch relay founded by Sri Chinmoy in 1987, in which people from all races, creeds, nationalities and social status run or walk with a lighted torch which represents our common inner aspiration for world-harmony and friendship.

Some people might ask if harmony between religions is at all possible, given all the conflicts that exist between different religions. It all depends on what we mean by religion. “What is religion?”, then, becomes an essential question in our quest for oneness.

The highest values of mankind are common in all religions. Also, all human beings share a common aspiration for peace and harmony, for happiness and fulfillment, and for the highest qualities of the spirit. Therefore, in its highest expression, religion has a universal appeal and character which addresses the deepest needs of humanity.

On his way to the goal, man sings the song of self-transcendence. if we look closer, we realise that man is the song of self-transcendence, the spirit within trying to manifest the Truth in the life without.

This quest for the deepest and highest Truth in each individual is the divine mission of life, the path to inner progress that we all tread to reach our Ultimate Goal of perfection.

We hope that these reflections by Sanjaya will inspire all Truth-seekers and God-lovers to foster and manifest this world-harmony vision of unity in multiplicity.
