Improvisations

Last modified May 31, 2010

Dear listeners, in this feature we present you with a recording titled “Improvisations”, which was originally published in Australia as an LP in 1976. In this recording, Sri Chinmoy improvises on the tot-a-tune and the clavichord. Spontaneous improvisations in Australia, March 1976 and in Bermuda, December 1976.

In his art, his poetry and his music, Sri Chinmoy manifests the quality of freedom in abundant measure. This freedom comes from the height and depths of his prayers and meditations, from the fountain of peace, light and bliss felt in these mystical states of union with God, with the heart of all human beings, with the universe.

Sri Chinmoy lives in the heart, the heart of all-embracing oneness, the heart of compassion and universal love. His music is therefore imbued with this all-pervading sweetness that touches the heart of the listener. His music is an act of sharing of the inner realities that unite us all as one world family; that essence that we all share in the core of our being.

His music is based on his love for God and for humanity. Sri Chinmoy aims to share, through music, all that he has received in his prayers and meditations.

Here is a small sample of Sri Chinmoy’s thoughts on music:

Question: Why do we like music?

Sri Chinmoy: “We like music because it teaches us how to love, whom to love and why to love. How do we love? We love by self-giving. whom do we love? we love God. Why do we love? We love because the divine lover in us has no existence of his own without feeling his oneness-reality with his Beloved Supreme.”

“Let us not try to understand music with our mind. Let us not even try to feel it with our heart. Let us simply and spontaneously allow the music-bird to fly in our heart-sky. While flying, it will unconditionally reveal to us what it has and what it is. What it has in Immortality’s message and what it is is Eternity’s passage.”
