The themes of Compassion and Forgiveness run deep in Sri Chinmoy's writings. There are literally thousands of essays and poems with the word Compassion in them.
Compassion and Forgiveness are not just ideas; they are divine realities which the seeker needs constantly in his/her journey to God-realisation.
This song, composed by Sri Chinmoy, is extremely simple, yet very sweet and inwardly rewarding. The text is as follows (unofficial):
"My life may not know what God's Compassion is,
But my heart does know what God's Forgiveness is."
According to Sri Chinmoy, outer compassion comes from inner illumination. There are two kinds of compassion: Human compassion and Divine Compassion. When you have really achieved something inwardly, then you can offer your devoted oneness and compassion to mankind. Otherwise, it is the play of the ego; I say I am compassionate towards you, but in reality I am expressing my sense of superiority, which comes from my ego.
In his writings, Sri Chinmoy offers sometimes the analogy of a tree. When a tree has no fruits, it stands erect. It is the same with us; our pride and ego prevent us from offering ourselves to mankind. But when the tree has fruits, when it is laden with fruits, it bends down so people can take them. Likewise, real humility comes from a sense of oneness with the Supreme, and oneness with humanity.
On the way to God-realisation, the seeker has to try to be aware of God's Compassion. But we often forget the Compassion that we are receiving. This is because we live in the mind, and not in the heart. Hence the significance of this song.
Along with Compassion, the seeker needs God's Forgiveness to reach the Goal of God-realisation. The seeker's spiritual heart has tremendous purity. It is like a divine child, so it is able to feel God's Forgiveness. Therefore, as seekers of the ultimate Truth, we need to learn to live in the heart.
We hope that songs like this one will be able to help all Truth-seekers and God-lovers on their way to the Ultimate Goal, and we are grateful to Sri Chinmoy for offering such gems of beauty, depth, wisdom and utter simplicity.
