"Dusahasi Pather Mita" and "Amito Tomare"

Last modified March 13, 2006

These beautiful songs by Sri Chinmoy touch me deeply. I cannot help but play with them and, at the same time, the songs are playing with me. I feel like a child, playing with spheres of light in different colors.

This is one of the things I like most about Sri Chinmoy‘s poetry and music: that he is able to identify with our human condition, and express it in such an artful way.

The meaning of the songs is (translation by Sri Chinmoy):

DUSAHASI PATHER MITA
“Indomitable storm is my fellow-traveler.
It calls me again and again
To play with it.
Tenebrous night also calls me to play with it;
Therefore I leave You
And go away far, very far.
O Beloved Supreme,
Will You not bind me once and for all
In the core of you eternity’s Heart?”
Sri Chinmoy

AMITO TOMARE
“I do not need You.
Yet why do You need me?
You know very well that I shall not surrender
my earth-existence to You.
Yet, why do You love me?
I know Your Compassion-Eye.
You forgive my little “i”.
Alas, why do I always remain in the heart
of blind darkness-night?”
Sri Chinmoy
